The Reproductive and Nutritional Management of Beef Bulls

چکیده

pregnancy rate is one of the most important factors determining profit or loss. Considerable emphasis and focus is placed on the nutritional and reproductive management of the cow herd; but, unfortunately, in most operations little emphasis is placed on the bull. However, each bull is expected to impregnate from 15 40 females during the breeding season in a typical cow-calf operation and, thus, the fertility of that bull actually is of considerably greater consequence than the fertility of an "individual" cow. Too often the range bull's breeding capacity is taken for granted, and the actual care and management of this bull during the non-breeding season is considered an inconvenience rather than an important part of a cow herd management program. Coulter (1992) reported that 18 30 percent of the range bulls were reproductively deficient and many more were barely adequate. Typical bull selection generally places little emphasis on reproductive traits such as scrotal circumference, and breeding soundness examination (BSE) scores.

Cow-calf reproductive, genetic, and nutritional management to improve the sustainability of whole beef production systems.

Optimizing efficiency in the cow-calf sector is an important step toward improving beef sustainability. The objective of the study was to use a model to identify the relative roles of reproductive, genetic, and nutritional management in minimizing beef production systems' environmental impact in an economically viable, socially acceptable manner. An economic and environmental diet optimizer was...

Reproductive Performance of Two- and Three-year-old Bulls Assigned Twenty-five or Forty Cows during the Breeding Period

Twoand 3-year-old beef bulls were exposed to 25 or 40 beef cows on pasture during a 90-day breeding period. Reproductive performance of bulls by age of bull and size of cow group was evaluated in terms of percentage calf crop. Results indicated that reproductive performance of 2-year-old bulls was higher, but not significantly different (P>.05), than that of 3-year-old bulls. The percentage cal...

Joint disorder; a contributory cause to reproductive failure in beef bulls?

The lame sire, unsound for breeding, can cause substantial economic loss due to reduced pregnancies in the beef-producing herd. To test the hypothesis that joint disorder is a possible cause of infertility in beef sires, right and left hind limb bones from 34 beef sires were examined postmortem to identify lesions in the femorotibial, femoropatellar (stifle), tarsocrural, talocalcaneus, and pro...

Fertility of yearling beef bulls during mating.

Crossbred (Bos taurus) yearling beef bulls were assessed for breeding soundness and physical traits prior to multi-sire natural mating at pasture. Bulls (n = 60) were assigned to six groups of nine or 10 bulls and two bull-groups were rotated on 14-day intervals during a 63-day mating season in each breeding herd (n = 3) of 191-196 cows. The remaining bulls (n = 14) were maintained under simila...
